The Jeep Wrangler Truck May Not Be What We've Been Hoping For

But hey, at least it's still happening.
 After years of asking and waiting, Jeep is finally set to build a pickup truck that’ll arrive in 2017 or 2018. Previously, we were told that it’ll be based on the next-generation Wrangler, which is due out in about a year’s time. Ok, so far so good. But then we got wind of this new report coming from Australia’s Car Advice. Speaking to Jeep design chief Mark Allen, that truck is still in a relatively early development stage and no final parameters have been decided just yet.



Specifically, Jeep is still performing market studies in regards to how this truck should be engineered. "Is it a pick-up truck or is it a Wrangler variant," Allen stated. In other words, the Wrangler-based truck may not even be Wrangler-based at all. Jeep may opt instead for it to be a standalone model, with elements taken from the next Wrangler, for a very practical reason: there’s no room to build a new truck model at the Jeep factory in Toledo, Ohio. Every single Wrangler built is being sold very quickly and Jeep can’t afford to give up any space on the production line. So, a Jeep pickup? Yes. Wrangler-based? Not necessarily.
