In behind the scene footage of the set for Ip Man 3, we get a glimpse of the choreography behind the crazy action fight scene between former professional boxer Mike Tyson and accomplished martial artist Donnie Yen.
The third film of the franchise is inspired by the master teacher of Wing Chun, a man who taught martial arts legend Bruce Lee himself. When you are portraying such a martial arts icon, the fight scenes have to be top notch.
Through interviews and B-roll footage we get to see the actors learning the choreography of the fighting and also some serious close calls! Donnie Yen said, ‘In one scene, his (Tyson) hook came extremely fast. Though I ducked swiftly, I still felt the blow flipping my hair.’
This film marked Mike Tyson’s first role in an action movie and with his trained punches being hundreds of pounds of force, Yen mentioned that he had to be incredibly cautious and a lapse of concentration could knock him down.

Donnie Yen had previously studied Mike Tyson’s past matches to prepare for his fight scenes with him.

Yen’s wife was worried that he would get hurt by Tyson but Tyson was the only one who ended up with an injury, a fractured index finger.
After portraying the character of Ip Man for three films, Ip Man 3 marks Donnie Yen’s last performance as the Chinese martial artist.
