Man Gets $500K After He Records Medical Staff Mocking Him While Under Anesthesia

While we have heard about those horror stories of patients waking up during surgery and able to feel pain, yet not able to move or speak, there is one thing that might hurt even more than that. Insults.  

For today’s insane lawsuit we go to Vienna, Virginia where an unidentified man was just awarded $500,000 for insults his anesthesiologist made about him while he was under anesthesia. Half a million dollars just for some insults? I was mocked relentlessly in middle school; where is my $500,000?! What could she have said that was so bad?  She said he has “penis Ebola. ” To be fair "penis Ebola" is the worst kind of Ebola you can get.

While the man did not wake up during his colonoscopy, he still had the crappy experience of hearing the horribly things his anesthesiologist, Tiffany Ingham said about him. Before he went under the man hit record on his smart phone so that when he was groggy after surgery he would be able to remember all of the instructions from the doctor. That’s when he discovered that the witty woman was roasting him in a room full of other medical staff. Comedy Central might want to line up Tiffany Ingham in case Jeff Ross isn’t available next time.  This lady dropped some zingers to the face of an unconscious man, commenting that;

 “After five minutes of talking to you in pre-op, I wanted to punch you in the face and man you up a little bit."

Ouch. Sticks and stones will break my bones, but that was uncalled for. When an assistant points out a rash on the man’s body Ingham warns her not to touch it and says; “It’s probably tuberculosis in the penis, so you’ll be all right.'

The gastroenterologist, Soloman Shah was not fined since he did not say anything on the recording, although he did not object to her insults of the patient either.

Originally lawyers for the patient wanted to get $1.75 million dollars for their client but the jury awarded him  $100K for defamation, $200K for medical malpractice and $200K in punitive damages.  So just remember; always record your surgery, you never know when some hanky panky is going on.

Do you think this was a fair settlement over some insults that were not intended to be heard by the patient? Or is this way too much money and the guy should have “manned up.”
