First Look at Goro in ‘Mortal Kombat X’

The gaming community can’t wait for Mortal Kombat X, and neither can the game’s developers, NetherRealm Studios. The closer that Mortal Kombat X gets to release, the giddier that the NetherRealm staff seems. Players have already seen Mortal Kombat X’s full roster, and even caught a glimpse of the game’s first 25 minutes, but NetherRealm simply can’t stop sharing more. They’re just that excited.

Case in point: later this afternoon, NetherRealm will host a five hour Kombat Kast livestream. The broadcast’s big draw was supposed the first in-game footage of Goro, Mortal Kombat’s multi-armed villain. But NetherRealm just couldn’t help itself: a few hours before the stream started, the studio unleashed a trailer showing Goro in all of his gruesome, devastating glory.

In the video, Goro pulls off a flurry of classic moves, using his double sets of arms to hold enemies in place while simultaneously ripping them in half, and setting opponents on fire with his fiery breath. Meanwhile, teaser text proudly claims that Goro might be “half-man” and “half-dragon,” but he’s “pure brute force.” For old school fans, there’s even a reference to the first Mortal Kombat movie: when Johnny Cage quips, “Headed for a fall, Goro,” the monster replies, “How, exactly?”

Goro initially joins Mortal Kombat X as a pre-order bonus, although NetherRealm plans to make him available as paid DLC somewhere down the line. Given how powerful Goro is (in Mortal Kombat canon, he’s a nine-generation winner of the Mortal Kombat tournament), some people are concerned that the character will be overpowered, thereby giving players who pre-ordered the game an unfair advantage in multiplayer competition. This trailer won’t do much to assuage those fears, but keep in mind that the trailer marketing tool. If Goro didn’t look cool and insurmountably deadly, the video wouldn’t be doing its job.

Mortal Kombat X Goro

Today’s Kombat Kast caps off another big week of Mortal Kombat X news. In addition to the final roster, NetherRealm gave fans their first look at the Mortal Kombat X mobile app. While Mortal Kombat X’s mobile incarnation should be a decent game in its own right, its most exciting features tie in withMortal Kombat X’s console editions. Playing the Mortal Kombat X mobile game contributes to the main title’s Faction Wars metagame, while dedicated kombatants can unlock special skins in the console game by playing through the mobile one.

In addition to Goro’s debut, the upcoming Kombat Kast features “some of the most popular gaming celebrities,” and will show off many of the other characters in single and multiplayer footage – after all, even Goro can’t fill a five hour broadcast. NetherRealm developers will discuss the game, and the studio will be handing out exclusive merchandise and copies of Mortal Kombat X throughout the stream. The Kast starts at 1PM PDT, on April 4, 2015.

Mortal Kombat X is set to release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and mobile on April 14, 2015.
