The SVO department at JLR previously gave us a taste of its talents through the 200mph F-Type SVR last year, showing what the F-Type chassis was capable of once everything was cranked up to 11. Now the skunkworks has turned its attention to the highly-competitive market of performance saloons through the XE SV Project 8 which will use a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine.
Tuning the unit also found in the Project 7, the V8 will produce a staggering 592bhp (600PS), making the Project 8 the most powerful road-going Jaguar ever. Eclipsing the XJ220 by 56bhp and the Project 7 by 25bhp, the Project 8 will be revealed to the public at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Only 300 examples are due to be produced, with the price tag being withheld by the guys and girls at JLR until things kick-off at Goodwood.
Extensive bodywork changes see the Project 8 feature a large rear wing, pronounced side skirts and a sunken front splitter, all of which will equate to this becoming the most hardcore Jaguar saloon ever produced.
Despite the heavy camouflaging in these press pictures, a brand new set of front grilles can be seen, used obviously to ventilate and cool the titanic engine and drivetrain crammed underneath the bonnet of the C63 rival.
After Jaguar timidly manufactured the F-Type Project 7, the SVO product created such high demand for the fin-wielding Jag that the company now says it could have sold 500 examples instead of the 250 examples that they thought would struggle to leave showroom floors. This demand will probably hike the price of the Project 8 above that of the special edition F-Type, resulting in a tag upwards of £130,000.
With Jaguar also being caught testing an XE 'SVR' in recent months, it seems the engineers at Coventry have realised the potential of the XE chassis. The Alfa Romeo Giulia QV and BMW M3 may dominate the marketplace right now but Jaguar seem very much set on altering that status quo. Good luck Jag, I'm certainly rooting for you!
