Why rally cars and water don’t mix

We raid the WRC+ archives for some classic wet weather action from Rally Australia 1996

World Rally Championship machines can deal with snow, mud, gravel and ice – but they really, really don’t like water.
A textbook demonstration of that fact came at the 1996 Rally Australia, when championship frontrunners Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz both got caught out by an engine-deep water splash on the Bunnings North stage.
Finn Tommi Mäkinen, who would go on to become that year’s World Rally champion, just about made it through the drink in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, and managed to win the rally ahead of Subaru’s Kenneth Erikkson.

Check out the video below.

The clip of the infamous Oz ’96 incident has been unearthed by the WRC as part of the championship’s History series. To help bridge the big gap until Rally Argentina gets underway on April 21, a different 45-minute rally history video – this clip comes from the Hot and Cold episode – will be uploaded onto the WRC+ site each week until the action starts in South America, providing rally fans with a mouth-watering look back into the World Rally Championship’s past.
WRC+ users can also enjoy highlights, onboard runs, live stages, timing screens and interactive maps from every WRC round on their computer, laptop, smart TV, smartphone or tablet, with a yearly subscription to the service costing €49.99 for 12 months, or €4.99 per month.
