Comic book movies are huge nowadays. It seems there is film after film of comic book heroes like Iron Man and Captain America.
Comic book characters can also give a community a voice. In the summer of 1966 Marvel’s Black Panther character became the first African American superhero and he is coming to a screen near you soon.
His name is T’Challa and his character made his debut in a Fantastic Four story. Black Panther has had his own story but hasn’t had the same success as Spiderman or X-Men, and reached a bigger audience yet.
But before the film hits theaters, Marvel is releasing a new Black Panther series today as he was looking a little dated from the original comics from the 70s and 80s.
Marvel has hired ‘Between the World and Me’ author Ta-Nehisi Coates and the illustrations are going to be amazing and modern. Coates was really excited to work on this project.
In an interview with The Verge he says ‘It really isn’t enough to have people punching each other and being awesome.’
He adds ‘Black Panther is an opportunity to draw from African culture.’ It looks like Black Panther is getting the makeover it needs, and fans will get their first look at him in Captain America: Civil War.
