Have you ever seen a car in your rear-view mirror that looked so angry, you just moved the hell out of the way? We asked you guys to nominate mean-looking rides that fit this description, and these are the results!
1. Buick Electra
At 5.7 metres in length, the first-generation Electra is already an imposing thing due to its sheer size, but the anger factor is upped even more by those fantastically moody eyebrows.
Suggested by Austin Klaiber, TDN
2. Zenvo ST1
We shouldn’t be surprised that the Zenvo ST1 tried to kill Jeremy Clarkson through fire in an episode of Top Gear, as its terrifying face makes it look like it’s up to no good before it’s even started moving. The powerplant is equally moody: it’s a 6.8-litre turbocharged and supercharged V8 that’s good for over 1100bhp.
Suggested by Franco Botes
3. Mercedes AMG Hammer
To create this brute, AMG - some time before it was acquired by Mercedes - took the worthy but rather staid W124 saloon, stiffened and lowered the suspension, uprated the brakes and dumped on an angry-looking bodykit which drastically lowered the drag coefficient. Then it squeezed a 6.0-litre, 375bhp V8 under the bonnet. Oh, and gave it the meanest name possible: Hammer.
Suggested by the conveniently named Mathijs Hamers
4. BMW E38 7-series
The E38 generation 7-series is a mean car for two reasons. Firstly, for the way it looks, with that low, boxy body and those wide kidney grilles, and secondly, because of the people that tend to drive these cars. While it’s not so much the case these days, 7-series drivers always used to be important, scary people. They’re the the sort of people that can get you fired, so you sure as hell don’t want to tick them off.
Suggested by Alex Gurney-Phillips, me
5. Shelby GT 350 R
Muscle cars tend to look rather aggressive as it is, but the new GT350 R version of the current Ford Mustang ups the anger even further with a socking-great rear wing, a mighty bonnet bulge and one of the most un-speedbump-friendly front splitters ever seen. The 5.2-litre flat-plane crank V8 sounds pretty angry, too.
Suggested by Andrew Tillson, The tatertot, Linus Holländare
6. Audi RS7
With lashings of honeycomb stuffed in their mouths, Audi’s RS’d motors tend to look rather mean, but arguably the pinnacle of understated rage is the RS7. Nestling behind all that honeycomb is the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 you get in the related RS6, here good for 552bhp.
Suggested by Jakob
7. Lamborghini Veneno
Lamborghini isn’t the sort of company that makes particularly cuddly cars, so when it really throws the kitchen sink at a design, the results can be petrifying. Take the Veneno as an example. Using the Aventador (already a car that looks like it wants to punch you in the face) as a starting point, Lamborghini upped the power from the 6.5-litre V12 to 739bhp, and added a function-led body with all manner of aero gubbins cut into its rakish profile. Just three coupe versions were made, followed by a further nine roadsters.
Suggested by Tarik Mem
8. Dodge Royal
Like the Buick Electra, the Dodge Royal is another frowny, fin-festooned car from the late 1950s. It wasn’t until 1959, however, that the Royal was restyled to give it this disapproving look on its face.
Suggested by Skye De Roos
9. Gumpert Apollo
The Gumpert Apollo is a car that was designed with little thought to aesthetics: it’s all about aero and cooling. As such, it’s probably one of the ugliest and angriest looking supercars ever made. And we rather love it for that.
It’s a shame, then, that the company behind this Audi-powered brute - started by former Audi sport director Roland Gumpert - has been at the brink of financial oblivion for the last few years, and is now pretty much defunct
