Nikon's new 800mm telephoto

 

Nikon's new 800mm telephoto costs US$17,899

They say you get what you pay for, and in the case of Nikon's new telephoto lens, your pockets had better be pretty deep indeed.

There's no chance of making a quick getaway with one of these mounted on your SLR.

The 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is the longest lens in the current line-up, and comes with a bundled teleconverter that takes the focal length to an incredible 1000mm. Maximum aperture drops to f/7.1 when using the teleconverter, though.
This lens is designed for FX (full-frame) Nikon cameras, though it could easily be used on a DX (crop-sensor) Nikon SLR. That is, if you have the money to spend. While Nikon Australia does not release official RRPs, to give you an idea of just how much this lens will cost, it retails for US$17,899.95 in the US.

Also announced at the same time by Nikon was a new wide-angle 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens, also designed for FX cameras. It appears to complement the recent release of the D600, and comes in at a more reasonable overseas retail price of US$749.95. Most of the other FX wide-angle offerings in Nikon's range are almost as expensive as the D600 itself
