RANT OF THE MONTH – FAKE WHEELS

This month the angry motorist is getting all worked up about replica wheels…
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the view of the ‘people who run reps should die’ brigade. A harsh, elitist point of view that I completely disagree with.
The crap I read on forums, Facebook and Twitter pisses me off. I see people smashing companies who produce look-a-like wheels that are imitations of expensive three-piece rims! They claim manufacturers have little-to-no imagination, when in reality the three-piece wheels they are talking about were, more than likely, a copy of another design from yesteryear. Yep, that’s right, the wheel you are championing is a copy of copy nob head. So at least do your research before you start spouting off whilst thinking your some kind of wheel history guru.
And don’t get me started on Japanese wheels. You see the same few fail pictures and MEMEs of busted Rota wheels doing the rounds, pictures that no one even knows the story behind. If there so bad how comes so many pro drifters use them? No after market wheel is indestructible. You think wheels from Work and Enkei never fail either? Idiots! Also, you get the fan boys having a go about companies that make wheels based on original wheels from 30 years ago, by companies that no longer even exist. So chances are if you did want that set of wheels you couldn’t source them anyway!
Thing is, I don’t think modifying shouldn’t be an elitist hobby. Everyone has a budget and not everyone can afford to spank a couple of grand on a set of wheels. And just because you can, doesn’t make you a better person, we all have to start somewhere.
Cheaper, good-looking wheels have made modifying more accessible to the younger end of the market. You might say ‘well they should work hard and save up for better wheels’. Do you have any idea how much it costs someone with zero or only a few years no claims bonus to get insured let along modify their car? I’ll tell you, it’s a fucking lot!
If something looks good and the car owner is happy with it, it shouldn’t matter what it costs. Sure, everyone would love to run custom made lightweight spilt rims with Kryptonite centres, but we can’t. Lighten up people. We’re all in this together!
